Reflection
1.Make connections between what you studied in this nutrition course with what you’ve learned in other courses at SLCC or before. Make specific references to your work in this class and in the other courses. How did what you learn in the other courses enhance what you learned in nutrition, and vice versa? While I’ve been taking this Nutrition course at SLCC I’ve also been taking Human biology. In my Human Biology class we’ve been studying the human body ant the organ systems in the body. This Nutrition class has actually helped me with my Human Biology class. In Nutrition we’ve been talking about the vitamins and minerals our bodies need in order to function, different organ systems in our bodies need different nutrients to function. For example, our bodies need a sufficient source of potassium in order for our muscles to relax and contract. Without enough potassium we experience painful muscle cramps. In order to get a sufficient about of potassium we need to add it to our diets by eating foods full of potassium like bananas or taking supplements. It was cool to see how these two classes went hand in hand. 2.Reflect on how you thought about nutrition before you took this course and how you think about it now that the course is over. Have any of your assumptions or understandings changed? Why? What assignments/activities/readings were influential in this process? How will you approach (course topic) differently in the future? Before I took this class I knew about nutrition and I knew that I needed to better my diet. I knew that fruits and vegetables are good for you and processed foods are bad for you. As a society we are addicted to fast/junk food. But it’s the social norm. Before I started this class I had no idea what the effects of a poor diet can cause. I have changed the error of my ways. This class has definitely opened my eyes. I think the assignment that impacted me the most is the Nutrition Perspective assignment. I watched a documentary about a man who only drank juices for a full 60 days. While he was doing a juice cleanse he traveled around the United States interviewing different Americans. Some Americans were set in their ways, but others wanted to change. I think as we are learning more as a society we want to change. You are seeing more information on daytime television and internet about nutrition and how we need to start eating healthier, because if we continue with the processed foods we’re all are going to be sick the rest of our lives. When it comes to nutrition I am going to be more aware of what I put in my mouth, because it can affect us positively and negatively. If and when I ever have children I’m going to do the same for them. I want them to have a happy healthy life. And it will all start with me and what I feed them.
